No census records?
In my research for clients, people reported as residents of or last know address is “X”, the logical start for any research would be Census records.
In cases where the residence in known (after 1882 the PO required house numbers) that the people might not been enumerated or counted because of the following reasons:
Not a head of the household (before 1850), renter/boarder- may not be counted because the census taker did not have local knowledge of boarding houses or rooms for rent, criminal/civil difficulties- even in 1900 being off the net might have been OK for those wishing to remain hidden from view or illiterate and unable to read or write in English and may have not bothered being sought out as it were or had an “old country” distrust of government of any kind.
Just my observations based on real world observations. What would be your thoughts?
